Bryn y Wawr - The Local Area

Bryn y Wawr is situated in the centre of Llandeilo, a picturesque market town located on a hill above the river Tywi in the Towy Valley. Essentially a rural town, Llandeilo is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Llandeilo has a rich and diverse history and was the centre of Roman activity in Mid-Wales.

With a population of about 2,000, Llandeilo is the administrative centre of Dinefwr and for centuries enjoyed a high status as the county town of the old county of Carmarthenshire. Named after St. Teilo, a popular saint from the 6th century, Llandeilo is closely associated with the spread of Christianity across Wales. Today it houses a number of stunning medieval churches and the historic Dinefwr Castle. A large part of the townscape has been designated as a conservation area due to its unique Mediaeval, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian streets filled with coloured houses.

Llandeilo is part of the Transition Towns movement - in fact it was the first town in Wales to be registered as a Transition Town. This movement represents a community response to Climate Change and Peak Oil and is focused on exploring how the town and its surrounding area can adapt to a future of low oil consumption and low carbon emissions.

Aside from the wealth of architectural interest within the town and the surrounding areas, the region offers some of the most revered walks in the UK through some of the most spectacular countryside. Virtually all energetic pursuits are catered for including rock climbing, kayaking, quad biking, mountain biking etc.

The Towy Valley is home to the National Botanic Gardens of Wales and three miles from Llandeilo is Gelli Aur, a Country Park with 60 acres of wooded parkland surrounding a magnificent mansion.
